Jon Prins' Tumblog or whatever

This is a spot for posts and bookmarks of the programming, math and science persuasion.

Justin Schmidt has allowed himself to be stung 150 times… for science!
Over at the Daily Mail, he ranks his 10 most painful stings. Ranging from the expected, such as the honey bee and fire ant, to the exotic, Schmidt ranks and describes his most memorable stings. He had this to say about a yellow jacket sting, ranked at 2.0 out of 4.0: “Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue.”

The King of Stings, of course, is the Bullet Ant. The South American Satere-Mawe tribe, in the Amazonian rainforest, uses them in their male rite of passage. “Mittens,” made plant strips woven around hundreds of sedated bullet ants (stingers facing in!) must be worn for ten minutes, and the subject must not make a sound.
Makes American middle schools like like heaven, doesn’t it?
